University of Missouri System Selected for $160 Million Critical Materials Funding

Federal investment positions the Greater Missouri region as a leader in critical materials innovation.

The University of Missouri–Kansas City (UMKC) has been selected to lead the Critical Materials Crossroads Engine, one of just 12 recipients nationwide of the U.S. National Science Foundation’s (NSF) Regional Innovation Engines award.

The award provides up to $160 million over 10 years to accelerate innovation in critical materials, strengthen domestic supply chains, and position the Greater Kansas City region as a national leader in advanced manufacturing and materials science. It is the largest research award in the history of UMKC, the University of Missouri System, and the State of Missouri.

According to the University of Missouri, “This monumental achievement marks potentially the largest award in Missouri higher education history and one of the nation’s most significant investments in rebuilding America’s domestic critical materials ecosystem.” The university also noted that “Led by University of Missouri-Kansas City, this regional consortium includes all four institutions of the UM System—the University of Missouri, Missouri University of Science and Technology, the University of Missouri-St. Louis and UMKC. This partnership will build an ecosystem to ensure national security and energy independence as well as economic development.”

The announcement also builds on Missouri’s growing reputation as a center for research and innovation. UMKC was one of four Missouri universities selected to advance in the NSF Regional Innovation Engines competition, highlighting the depth of the state’s research institutions and their collaborative approach to solving complex national challenges.

Critical materials—including nickel, cobalt, magnesium, and rare earth elements—are essential to batteries, semiconductors, medical technologies, defense systems, and other advanced technologies. As the organizing institution, UMKC will lead a coalition of more than 260 industry, academic, government, and nonprofit partners working to strengthen America’s supply of these essential materials through research, commercialization, and workforce development.

The initiative is expected to create more than 10,000 jobs and generate an estimated $17 billion in regional economic impact, while expanding opportunities for research, entrepreneurship, and high-demand careers.
