The U.S. Department of Commerce announced it will provide up to $400 million in funding to GlobalWafers Co., a global leader in semiconductor technology. The funding will come from the CHIPS and Science Act, which aims to grow the semiconductor supply chain in the U.S.

GlobalWafers Co. will use the federal funding to support capital investments at two U.S. facilities including MEMC, LLC, an O’Fallon, Missouri-based subsidiary of GlobalWafers Co. that produces silicon wafers. The expansion will make MEMC, LLC the only manufacturer of its size to produce 300mm silicon-on-insulator wafers in the U.S.

This initiative is part of a broader strategy to combat the global semiconductor shortage, onshore a critical component for the semiconductors, and maintain the U.S.’s competitive edge in the global semiconductor market.

Missouri’s natural resources, innovation communities, and rich history in aerospace and defense have attracted investments from the federal government throughout the state. From critical minerals, to tech hubs, to workforce development and now semiconductor production, the U.S. Government is investing in Missouri to strengthen America’s advanced manufacturing supply chain.
