Kansas City, Gladstone and Columbia, Missouri, have each received the top designation by the SolSmart program, which signals that a community is “open for solar business.” This enables communities to be more effective in attracting solar industry investment and the development of local energy-related jobs.
Twenty-two cities nationally received SolSmart designation with 14, including all three Missouri cities, receiving the top-rated SolSmart Gold designation. The SolSmart program, which is funded by the U.S. Department of Energy, recognizes cities and counties for adopting programs and processes that encourage the growth of local solar markets.
Missouri’ solar market has grown faster than the national average since 2009. Missouri’s low cost of energy combined with low cost of living and doing business, positions Missouri as a prime location for manufacturers in the energy sector.
