Scale AI and UMSL team up to launch a GIS (Geographic Information Systems) Certificate program to strengthen the AI and Geospatial workforce in St. Louis

Just three years after Scale AI opened its first St. Louis office, the leading data-centric artificial intelligence company is deepening its commitment to the region with two major milestones: a workforce-building partnership with the University of Missouri–St. Louis (UMSL) and a newly announced expansion into a state-of-the-art AI Center. Together, these efforts signal Scale AI’s long-term investment in both its people and the geospatial and AI ecosystem growing in St. Louis.
St. Louis is one of only four Global Hubs for Scale AI, whose mission is to develop reliable, trustworthy AI systems for some of the world’s most important decisions.
To sustain that mission, and to help grow the talent needed for it, Scale AI partnered with UMSL to create the Scale AI and University of Missouri – St. Louis Geospatial Collaborative. This collaboration is rooted in UMSL’s mission to prepare talent for the region’s growing geospatial and defense technology sectors and Scale AI’s commitment to empowering its 250-person team to grow technically and professionally while also building the AI workforce of the future in St. Louis.
The Collaborative allows Scale AI employees to take part in the UMSL GIS Certificate Program through virtual classes at the AI Center. GIS students at UMSL will have opportunities to earn scholarships and gain exposure to cutting-edge applications in AI and geospatial technology while building pathways into careers across St. Louis’ growing geospatial ecosystem.
“We came to St. Louis four years ago to be close to our government partners and build the nation’s premier team for geospatial AI. This new space will allow us to continue investing in our 250-person team and the entire local ecosystem. We are proud to be a catalyst for innovation in Downtown North and are committed to making St. Louis the undisputed best place in the world to cultivate the talent that is so critical to our national security.”
— AJ Segal, Head of the St. Louis AI Center at Scale AI
Scale AI’s investment in the region goes far beyond real estate: it represents a long-term strategy to build Missouri’s AI and geospatial talent pipeline and meet the rising demand for professionals skilled in advanced GIS and AI-driven geospatial technologies. If you’re interested in learning more about growing your AI or Geospatial business in Missouri, contact our team today.
