Holcim U.S., the largest cement manufacturer in North America, was awarded $1.3 million from The Environmental Protection Agency to report and reduce carbon emissions at its Ste. Genevieve, Missouri cement plant, which is the largest of its kind in the U.S.
In 2023, the company announced it was investing $100 million in an expansion that would increase capacity while focusing on reducing emissions. The EPA funding will help further strengthen its commitments to reducing its carbon footprint at the Missouri facility, which produces 4.5 million metric tons of cement annually.
According to the Holcim U.S. website, the Ste. Genevieve plant is one of the most environmentally efficient in the world and employs more than 250 individuals alone. “With sustainability at the core of its strategy, Holcim is becoming a net zero company, with its people and communities at the heart of its success. The company is driving the circular economy as a world leader in recycling to build more with less.“ (holcim.com)
Holcim U.S. benefits from Missouri’s central location and close proximity to the Mississippi River. According to the Holcim U.S. website, “One in five building projects in the U.S. contains Ste. Genevieve-produced cement because of the access our plant has to America’s river system, including the Mississippi River on its eastern border.”
“You can find Ste. Genevieve cement in the foundations of the places you live, work and play including Ballpark Village, St. Louis airport, and Jefferson College. (holcim.com)
