Missouri Manufacturer of Silicon Wafers Secures CHIPS Act Investment to Expand Domestic Silicon Wafer Production

The U.S. Department of Commerce announced direct funding awards to GlobalWafers’ subsidiaries (GlobalWafers America, LLC and MEMC LLC) of up to $406 million under the CHIPS Incentives Program’s Funding Opportunity for Commercial Fabrication Facilities. The investments will help strengthen the domestic supply chain for key semiconductor components.

According to the press release, “The awards will directly support the construction of wafer manufacturing facilities in Texas and Missouri and is expected to create approximately 1,700 construction jobs and 880 manufacturing jobs across both states.”

The MEMC facility in Missouri will be the only manufacturer of its size to produce 300mm silicon-on-insulator (SOI) wafers, which are essential for making devices used in the defense and aerospace industries.

Missouri, known for its resources, innovation, and aerospace and defense sectors, continues to attract federal investments in critical minerals, technology hubs, workforce development, and advanced manufacturing.President Biden signed the historic and bipartisan CHIPS and Science Act into law investing nearly $53 billion in funding to bring semiconductor supply chains back to the U.S, create jobs, support American innovation, and protect our national security.
