As Kansas City prepares to take the global stage as a host city for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the metro is in the midst of one of the most ambitious periods of growth and reinvestment in its modern history. From new entertainment districts to major infrastructure upgrades, these developments are shaping the region’s long-term future.

Here’s a look at the signature projects redefining Kansas City as 2026 approaches.

KC Streetcar Main Street Extension

Since launching in 2016, the KC Streetcar has quickly established itself as one of the nation’s premier modern streetcar systems. With 32 stops now spanning nearly six miles, the newly expanded, fare-free line delivers more frequent, reliable service than ever, and riders are responding. In November alone, the streetcar recorded 341,922 trips, pushing its 2025 ridership to nearly 1.8 million and reinforcing its role as a vital connector across Kansas City’s urban core.

Rock Island Bridge: America’s First Destination Landmark Bridge

Set to become one of the region’s most unique gathering spaces, the Rock Island Bridge is transforming an historic 1905 railroad bridge into a vibrant entertainment destination suspended over the Kansas River. The project will include restaurants, bars, live music and event space, and trail connections for walking, running, and biking on both the Kansas and Missouri sides. According to the Rock Island Bridge website, the Bridge is free and open to the general public from March to December.

Universal Music Hotel: Reimagining the Scarritt Building

The long-vacant historic Scarritt Building is being reborn as a mixed-use development anchored by a Universal Music–branded hotel, a first-of-its-kind concept in the Midwest. The $480 million project includes hotel rooms, residential units, retail, and a music-driven entertainment venue. Construction kicks off in 2026 and continues in phases through the early 2030s. Once complete, it will serve as a cultural hub in the heart of downtown, expanding the city’s hospitality and entertainment offerings.

Roy Blunt Luminary Park: Capping the South Loop

One of Kansas City’s biggest civic endeavors is the creation of the Roy Blunt Luminary Park, a 5.5-acre green space built over I-670 to reconnect the Power and Light Central Business District with the Crossroads Arts District. The urban park is a collaborative effort led by Kansas City, the Downtown Council of Kansas City, and Port KC. While foundational work will begin around 2026, the full park will be constructed over several years, ultimately delivering a signature downtown amenity. When complete, it will offer lawns, gardens, play areas, and community gathering space.

SomeraRoad’s West Bottoms Redevelopment: A New Era for the District

The West Bottoms is undergoing a dramatic transformation thanks to SomeraRoad’s multi-phase redevelopment spanning more than a decade. Construction began in 2024, with the first wave of projects rolling out through 2026. Long term, the $500+ million plan will create a thriving, walkable district that blends historic warehouse character with new residential and commercial opportunities. The redevelopment positions the West Bottoms as one of KC’s next great urban neighborhoods.

These investments strengthen local infrastructure well beyond the 2026 tournament, supporting residents and businesses for decades to come.

Kansas City is using the World Cup spotlight to accelerate major projects that will improve the quality of life, expand tourism, and drive economic development long after 2026. From iconic bridges and reimagined historic structures to transit upgrades and neighborhood revitalization, the city is embracing bold ideas and investing in its future.
