Nike’s Air Manufacturing Innovation (Air MI) facility in Missouri is one of three state-of-the art manufacturing facilities around the world producing the iconic Air units that define some of Nike’s most popular shoes.
Originally founded in 1964 as Tetra Plastics, the company was purchased by Nike in 1991 and moved to its Missouri Research Park location in 1995. The advanced manufacturing facility completed a 75,000 square foot expansion in 2019.
The Air MI facility showcases Nike’s commitment to precision engineering and sustainability. Advanced manufacturing techniques, such as thermoforming and injection molding, allow the facility to produce lightweight, durable Air units that enhance athletic performance. Nike’s use of recycled materials in these processes also highlights its dedication to reducing environmental impact. The facility recycles over 90% of the waste generated during production, transforming it into new products or energy.
Beyond its technological advancements, the facility’s focus on workforce development through collaboration with local educational institutions ensures a steady flow of skilled talent, while keeping current employees engaged and growing within the company.
Missouri’s robust manufacturing sector leverages cutting-edge technologies, including automation, robotics, and sustainable practices, to produce high-quality products across various industries. Missouri’s commitment to workforce development, combined with its robust infrastructure, makes it an attractive destination for manufacturers looking to stay competitive in the global market.
