Boeing will build parts for its 777X commercial aircraft in St. Louis, a silver lining of sorts after the region lost out on production of the plane itself to Washington state in January.

The move will create 700 jobs at Boeing operations in St. Louis County.

Boeing will make a “significant capital investment” in its St. Louis composites facility, officials said, and begin producing parts for the 777X in 2017.

It marks the first time production of Boeing commercial planes will take place here. Boeing has long produced military aircraft in the St. Louis region.
